About

Celebrate Mobile Museum of Art’s 60th Anniversary year at a one-of-a-kind event that will rocket you back to 1964, the year that MMofA first opened its doors. Join us for a night of music, dancing, frivolity, and downright fab fun as we celebrate this milestone birthday.

On the same night, MMofA will open a blockbuster exhibition, titled 1960s Hard Edge and Op Art: A Tribute to The Responsive Eye. The galleries will be filled with examples of the pioneering artistic movements that broke new ground at the Museum of Modern Art (NYC) during the exact moments that Mobile Museum of Art was opening. The artists represented in MOMA’s original The Responsive Eye exhibition were researching how the eye and mind respond to perceptions of color, pattern, light, time, and space. The masterworks that will travel to our community from museums across the country will demonstrate how their Optical Art experiments continue to surprise and delight visitors of all ages.

In addition, we’re excited to have some amazing entertainment. Coincidentally, a little band named The Beatles arrived in the United States in 1964, too. To celebrate this, BeatleBeat — a Beatles tribute band used by Walt Disney World’s EPCOT Center — will perform two sets in costumes you might recognize.

Your ticket includes an exclusive first peek at the special exhibition 1960s Hard Edge and Op Art: A Tribute to The Responsive Eye, performances by BeatleBeat, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and an open bar. We encourage you to dress in your grooviest 60s outfit (check out our lookbook here), but we’ll have some fun swag items available, too!
