Churches & Cemeteries

Dozens of historic churches can be found throughout Mobile, each documenting the faith, reflection and beliefs of societies current and past The Mobile area is home to one of the greatest collection of historic churches in the South and visitors spend hours, if not days, learning more about Mobile's history through its religious representations. From Catholic to Jewish to Baptist, from grand to quaint, Mobile's historic churches are a draw for history buffs, architectural admirers and theologians alike.

To study Mobile's historic cemeteries such as Church Street and Magnolia is to enter into Mobile's 19th and early 20th century social history. The tombs, sculptures and monuments erected throughout these hallowed grounds reflect religious beliefs, the socio-economic conditions of the time, and attitudes about honoring the dead. The 19th century's approach to death helped produce picturesque and romantic ideas toward death which resulted in elaborate monuments and unique funerary sculpture. These stoic monuments remain for us a guide to better understanding those that have gone before us.
