Visit the Bottle Creek Mounds
The Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, also known as America’s Amazon, has historically been one of the main resources for living and agriculture. One of the lasting Native American landmarks that still exist in the area is the Bottle Creek Mounds, located in the heart of the delta. The 18 earthen mounds were constructed by Mississippian-era people around 1250 C.E. Since the area is only accessible by boat or kayak, be prepared for a journey through the delta. Occasionally, tours of the mounds are provided by Historic Blakeley State Park. Visit their event calendar to sign up.
Engage with Nature and History
Some of Mobile’s most popular outdoor attractions were once home to Native American villages. The Historic Blakeley State Park was home to one of the most significant prehistoric Native American villages in the Southeast. Chickasabogue Park, which is temporarily closed due to renovations, was previously inhabited by Indigenous people from the Woodland and Mississippi Periods about 1500 B.C. Chickasabogue Park also has a museum that features artifacts of Native Americans and English, Spanish and French settlers.
Attend events
The Poarch Creek Indians and MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians are both active tribes that host powwows, festivals and other events throughout the year. Check our event calendar for other Native American or overall cultural happenings in the area.
