Freedom Monologues & Open Mic Night Juneteenth Celebration 2026
Experience an evening of storytelling and creative expression at the Freedom Monologues & Open Mic Night Juneteenth Celebration at the Africatown Heritage House on June 19 from 5-7:30 p.m. The program features powerful performances of original monologues exploring freedom through the Black experience, alongside poetry from local voices, including Mobile’s Poet Laureate, Alex “Huggy Bear” Lofton—with opportunities for guests to share their own work. Admission is free; bring a chair and enjoy bites from Short Dogs food truck.
2026 MAMGA Fest: A Juneteenth Celebration Block Party
On Saturday, June 20 from 2-6 p.m., celebrate Black culture, heritage and community with the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association. Guest speakers, music, food and family-friendly fun await!

History of Juneteenth
Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) is celebrated as the day in 1865 when Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The troop's arrival came two and a half years after former President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.
