The De Tonti Square Historic District is a charming neighborhood that blends rich history with modern-day vibrancy. With its stately antebellum homes, picturesque streets and proximity to some of our most popular local attractions, De Tonti Square offers a unique glimpse into Mobile’s past while remaining an integral part of its present.
A Brief History of De Tonti Square
Known simply as “De Tonti Square” by locals, this neighborhood is named after Henri de Tonti, an Italian-born French explorer who was a key figure in the early exploration of the Gulf Coast. His role in establishing trading posts along the Mississippi River and his friendship with the French colonists cemented his legacy in the region. By the mid-1800s, it had become a hub for the city's wealthier residents, who built grand homes in the famous Greek Revival and Italianate styles.
The neighborhood flourished until the late 1800s, but by the 20th century, it had fallen into disrepair as many residents and businesses moved to other parts of Mobile. However, in the 1970s, preservation efforts revived De Tonti Square. Today, the De Tonti Square Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has experienced a renaissance, becoming a sought-after residential area known for its beauty and charm.
