So many unique facets of Gulf Coast culture have been brightened because of one man: Jimmy Buffett. Celebrate his stamp on the world at Son of a Sailor (S.O.S.) Fest on Saturday, September 20 in downtown Mobile. Here’s your guide to everything S.O.S. Fest!

What do I wear?

Answer: Bring out the sandals, leis and Hawaiian-themed shirts! In true Jimmy Buffett fashion, floral patterns, bold colors and aviator shades will be all the rage. Since the festival is outside, we recommend wearing shorts, short-sleeved shirts and comfortable shoes to dance the day away in.

Who do I bring?

Answer: Come one, come all! Everyone is welcome at S.O.S. Fest. Whether you’re intrigued by Gulf Coast culture, new to Mobile’s music scene or want to share the love for Buffett with other parrot heads, we encourage you to come partake in the fun. Be sure to bring your family and friends!

What can I expect?

Answer: This is a lively celebration that Buffett himself would have given a large thumbs-up. Costume contests, a second-line parade featuring the Blow House Brass Band and performances from members of the Coral Reefer Band, Ryan Balthrop & Slide Bayou, Daria & The Hip Drops and Jammy Buffett will only add to the magic.

How did Son of a Sailor Fest start?

Answer: A group of parrot heads felt moved by Buffett’s passing in September 2023 and wanted to honor his legacy with a second-line band and small parade through downtown Mobile. News of the event spread and fans from far and wide flocked to the Port City to pay tribute. Learn more about S.O.S. Fest’s beginnings in this Q&A interview with Joseph Brennan, the event’s principal organizer.

What are the hotel options?

Answer: Whether you prefer to stay close to the buzz of downtown or other areas throughout the city, you’re guaranteed a phenomenal experience. Our hotels can suit all preferences, budgets and accommodations.

Where can I park?

Answer: Downtown Mobile has ample free and paid parking lots and garages. Parking meters will accept coins, credit/debit cards and payment through Park Mobile parking app. Rates vary depending on the parking lot and the anticipated length that the spot will use.

Will there be alcohol?

Answer: Son of a Sailor Fest will not sell food or alcohol. Alcohol and other drinks will be available for purchase from the surrounding restaurants, businesses and vendors. Fun fact! Downtown Mobile's entertainment district supports open-container beverages, so feel free to sip the night away over your to-go drink of choice.

What items/materials are accepted and prohibited in S.O.S. Fest?

Allowed: Beach chairs, bag chairs, ponchos, small, personal-sized coolers, leashed and well-behaved pets and good vibes.

Prohibited: Large coolers and ice chests, beach umbrellas, anything that could obstruct others’ views and unleased pets/animals.

Answer: Downtown Mobile is home to some of the city’s most eclectic dishes. Heroes Sports Bar & Grille, Debris Po-Boys & Drinks, Pat’s Downtown, T.P. Crockmiers and Loda Bier Garten are just a few of the restaurants close to the action. Food trucks will also be located near all the action to provide even more options for guests. No matter where you choose to dine, you won’t be disappointed.

What will the weather be like at the festival?

Answer: In Mobile, late September normally means less humidity, a slight breeze and temperatures in the low 80s; however, rain is always possible regardless of the season. We recommend keeping a poncho handy!
