The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion in Mobile, Alabama is a historic home that offers tours along with being a gorgeous wedding venue.
The tour of the Bragg-Mitchel Mansion takes about an hour and is led by a fantastic host/hostess. They take you through the historic home pointing out unique architectural details, furniture that has lasted through multiple hurricanes, and tell you about the history of the home.
I found the tour to be really interesting. I learned a lot about not only the house's history but also this part of Mobile, Alabama. The law library office was amazing. So cool to hear that lawyers still visit the museum to look at the books that are in the library.
The Bragg-Mitchel Mansion was built in 1855 by Judge John Bragg. The mansion is a 13,000 square foot Greek revival home. The Azaleas are absolutely gorgeous in the spring. Don't miss checking out the gorgeous live oaks that line the front yard. You can see how historically, carriages would have traveled past the house.
Judge Bragg and his family lived in the house from Thanksgiving through Mardi Gras to enjoy Mobile's social season. The Bragg family owned the house until 1880. The house went through multiple owners until 1965. The final private owners of the mansion were the A.S. Mitchell family, who purchased the property in 1931. The family originally donated the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion to become an interactive science museum. The museum was built elsewhere, and they instead focused on renovating the museum to its antebellum grandeur. After the $3 million dollar renovation the mansion reopened to the public in 1987.
During the tour you can hear about the house and how it was used during the Civil War.
The Bragg-Mitchell mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
