First-of-its-Kind for the Region: Mobile Museum of Art is the exclusive host venue for GATEWAY: From Graffiti to Gallery, a blockbuster exhibition bringing 28 major works by five of the biggest names in street art directly to Mobile. This exhibit is presented in collaboration with Masterworks Foundation and Level & Co. Gallery, with generous sponsorship from Lexus of Mobile.
Artist Highlights:
1980s NYC Trailblazers: Jean-Michel Basquiat (cryptic script & street grit), Keith Haring (iconic energetic line work) and Kenny Scharf (vibrant pop surrealism, featuring the Evolution Revolution series).
Modern Masters: KAWS (advertising interventions, scale, and the CHUM series) and Banksy (sharp political stencils).
From Subways to Galleries: GATEWAY traces how unauthorized acts of self-expression in public spaces formalized into a recognized artistic movement that commands global museum attention.
High Art Meets Mass Culture: These works highlight how these five artists redefined modern art's boundaries — spanning fine art galleries to high-profile pop culture (Madonna and Jay-Z stage backdrops) and global commercial releases (Lego sets, Target apparel).
Monthly Tours: Monthly gallery tours hosted by different MMoA team members starting fall 2026.
2026 Events: Graffiti-themed Family Day on October 24, 2026, alongside ongoing teen mural workshops and film screenings.
2027 Highlights: Artist Talk with Kenny Scharf in spring 2027 and a themed Art After Dark on July 22, 2027.
Why GATEWAY Matters: Graffiti in and of itself is a very accessible art form. Not only is it easy for someone to create (just need paint and somewhere to put it), but it's also easy for people to find and view. As a community that thrives on public and street art, this show brings world-famous artists directly to Mobile, giving our community front-row access to art that feels relevant, approachable, and familiar.
