It's awards season and one of Mobile's brightest stars has received a national nomination. The Africatown Heritage House, with its Clotilda: The Exhibition experience, has earned a spot among 20 history museums in the United States as the nation's favorite, according to USA Today.
The USA Today 10 Best History Museums of 2025 will be determined by voting, which is open to the public. Readers may vote once per day until polls close on Monday, February 10 at 11 a.m., CT. The winning museums, as determined by votes, will be announced on Wednesday, February 19.
The Africatown Heritage House received nomination to the prestigious list because it holds a significant place in American history due to its connection with the Clotilda. This is the last known ship to bring enslaved Africans to the United States in 1860, despite the ban on the international slave trade.
Exhibits, events, lectures and community programs engage visitors and foster dialogue about African American history, social justice and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
Clotilda: The Exhibition covers the story with a special focus on the people of the story – their individuality, their perseverance and the extraordinary community they established. The exhibition tells the story of the 110 remarkable men, women and children, from their West African beginnings, to their enslavement, to their settlement of Africatown and finally the discovery of the sunken schooner, all through a combination of interpretive text panels, documents, oral history and artifacts.
