VM: Can you tell us a little about yourself and your role with PRISM United?
RB: I'm Rachel Bright, Deputy Director of PRISM United. I help oversee organizational operations, fundraising, communications, and strategic initiatives that support LGBTQ+ youth and families across southwest Alabama. My background is in education, libraries, and community engagement, and I'm passionate about creating spaces where people feel seen and supported.

VM: What first connected you to Mobile, and what keeps you rooted here?
RB: I grew up here, so Mobile has always been home. While I've lived in other places and cities over the years, I always find myself gravitating back. What keeps me rooted here is the people. Mobile has a strong sense of place, deep history, and a growing community of individuals who care deeply about making life better for their neighbors. The relationships I've built here continue to inspire me.

VM: What inspired your involvement with PRISM United?
RB: I was captivated by Prism's commitment to meeting real needs in our community. LGBTQ+ young people deserve spaces where they can be themselves, access support, and build meaningful connections. Prism combines practical services with genuine community care, and I wanted to be part of that work.

VM: What role does PRISM United play in helping foster connection and inclusion in the city?
RB: Prism creates opportunities for people to find community, whether through youth programs, family events, mental health support, leadership development, or community celebrations. We help people connect not only with one another but also with resources, businesses, and organizations that affirm and support them.

VM: What makes Mobile a welcoming place for LGBTQ+ visitors and locals?
RB: What stands out to me is the growing network of people and organizations working to make Mobile more inclusive. There are welcoming businesses, community groups, artists, faith communities, and advocates who consistently show up and create spaces where people feel like they belong.

VM: What are some local businesses, organizations, or spaces that help make Mobile feel welcoming and inclusive?
RB: There are so many. The fact that nearly 40 LoDa businesses are participating in Alive With Pride this year speaks for itself and reflects the strong support for inclusion within our local business community. Places like Braided River Brewing Company, Soul Caffeine, and The Frenchmen are great examples of businesses that help foster connection and create welcoming environments.

Mobile is also home to the "Fruit Loop," a downtown block that includes three LGBTQ+ bars, B-Bob's, Flip Side Bar & Patio, and Gabriel's Downtown. It's a unique community hub and a reminder that LGBTQ+ culture and connection have deep roots here.

VM: What spaces or events in Mobile make you feel most connected to the community?
RB: Community events are where I feel that connection most strongly. Pride ArtWalk, Come Out Mobile, Wig Walk, local art events, and neighborhood gatherings all bring together people from different backgrounds who share a commitment to community and belonging.

VM: What keeps you hopeful and excited about the city's future?
RB: The people. Every year I see more collaboration between nonprofits, businesses, artists, educators, and community members. There's a growing recognition that our diversity is one of our strengths, and that gives me a lot of hope for where Mobile is headed.

VM: What's one hidden gem you wish more people knew about?
RB: The hidden gem is Mobile itself. People who haven't been here in a while are often surprised by how much energy, creativity, and growth is happening. There are new businesses, community events, arts initiatives, and civic projects popping up all the time. It's a city that's evolving while still holding onto its character.

VM: Finally, what does "community" mean to you in the context of Mobile?
RB: Community means showing up for one another. It's neighbors helping neighbors, organizations working together, and people creating spaces where everyone feels they belong. At its best, community is about connection, care, and the belief that we all have a role to play in making Mobile a better place.
